Renata
How are you feeling today?
Fatigued yet calm. Overwhelmed yet appreciative of the little things.
What are you most proud of?
My ability to self-soothe and distract despite (at times) being in tremendous amounts of pain. It’s an art form, and one that I’m continually trying to perfect as a person with chronic illness who lives alone.
What is your biggest learning in life so far?
That my body and mind are incredibly resilient. They can overcome the unthinkable in terms of my illnesses and disabilities.
What are your hopes for the future?
For a more inclusive world in which invisible illness is better understood and appreciated.
What would you tell your younger self?
To enjoy every little moment that sparks joy, no matter how seemingly insignificant.
When or where are you happiest?
When I was training to compete in CrossFit before my hysterectomy. As a former collegiate athlete, being forced to surrender exercise to my illness has been among my most difficult challenges.
What would you like to say to wider society?
Everyone is on their own journey. Whether you have children or not, married or single. No one’s path should look the same or work within the same timeframes. Give everyone the same attention and love.
